What kind of receiver you need to connect PS3 through HDMI to receiver and receiver via HDMI to plasma.?

I bought the pioneer Chnnel VSX917V with HDMI 7.1 (which I have since returned) and hooked via HDMI only. To get the sound I needed to change the settings on PS3 for the use of optical and optical connection? Why?. I want FULL HD sound. Do I need an HD receiver? Please help.

Here thingl is the main … HDMI carries all the information you need for great video and audio. Home theater receivers have HDMI support past several years, but today, the same can be confusing. Sounds good, but it has been a process. Principles of HDMI receivers did so audio via HDMI. What they did was just switch HDMI … as a great old HDMI switch box. Now, sure, that could change optical or analogue audio or left with each entry, at the same time, but no audio support. Recent amplifiers move a step closer … receiving audio HDMI (HDMI 1.3/1.3a for support in your amp), play, decrypt if needed, and pass through on your TV. Now, here's the next problem … Some amps can not take full 7.1 channel PCM audio over HDMI. If decoding HDMI, you can tell the PS3 to send an HDMI bitstream, and will be fine as long as your amp supports this format. As AC3 likely do well, but could not work with TrueHD … some of these bitstreams can not be sent by the PS3. So what we also need to check whether or not the receiver / amplifier can support full 8-channel PCM .. ensure that all the Blu-Ray (which, as of the release of 2.3, it is possible to decode in the PS3) to play on your new amp. My Sony STR-DG720 is a good match to the PS3. See here: http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/sony-str-dg720/4505-6466_7-32868568.html Note that the previous unit, the STR-DG710, did not support the 8-PCM ANNALS over HDMI, so it was kind of a problem with the PS3.
