Can you really see a big difference between a reg. DVD Player progressive scan and upconverting DVD player?

Good, depends. The difference between interlaced and progressive scan is more striking than the difference between progressive scan and upconversion. As TV signals normal look bad in a big high definition TV, DVD will also be pixelated with a big enough screen. Since you can not increase resolution 480p from a progressive scan DVD 720p/1080i/1080p, upconversion using existing information to complete the picture and "fool" our eyes not to notice the lower resolution in high resolution (HD) TV. With today's low prices on DVD players upscaling that probably go for it, could soften the image a bit and appear less jagged. You can also soften too much contrast and loose, so it's also a question of personal choice.
